Are 33.3m pools a thing of the past?

There are estimated to be less than 80 33.3m pools remaining in operation throughout the the UK. Designed to achieve a 100m swimming distance (3 lengths), this length of pool was typical from the Victorian era through to the 1970's. The common profile is a 6 lane width, with shallow end for beginners, increasing to a 3.4m to 3.8m deep end, often with diving facilities.

Operators are under pressure to provide a swimming facility that not only provides for all types and levels of swimmer, but also maximises the revenue opportunities. Recent government cuts have undoubtedly increased this pressure. The 33.3m pool cannot be used for competition, so current revenue is generated purely by recreational community swimming. So how are operators of 33.3m pools optimising their sales?

The answer is to split the pool into 2 sections with a bulkhead, creating a 25m competition pool and separate learner pool. What are the benefits?:

1. The 25m pool could be designed to meet ASA requirements and be used for short course competition. This will attract community, regional and even national swimming clubs for training and galas. Those pools with spectator seating have an added advantage.

2. The learner pool that is created can be used for all beginners, school lessons, adult lessons, aqua-aerobics, life guard training and many other shallow swimming activities. As a separate pool, these activities don't interrupt the use of the main 25m pool.

3. The pool water distribution pipework is likely to be aged and the design may not meet current day standards. A static bulkhead provides the facility to improve the water distribution system, by introducing new delivery or suction pipework inside the frame. Better water quality improves the swimming experience.

Over recent years, FT Leisure have reconfigured several 33.3m pools and are currently working on plans for 6 further conversions. We are receiving enquires regularly from operators who are preparing a business plan for improving their swimming facility.

In addition to a static bulkhead, there is also the possibility that a moveable floor can be installed in the deep end of the pool, adjacent to a static boom. This really does increase the functionality of the newly created learner pool. Please see the Billingham Forum project in our project gallery page.
