Cannock Chase project awarded

Work has now started on the major modernisation and refurbishment of Chase Leisure Centre with construction contractor G F Tomlinson Building Limited. Although both swimming pools at Chase Leisure will be closed from 24th April for up to 15 months, the modernisation project will be phased, which means the sports hall and fitness suite will remain open throughout

The new fitness suite will be developed in one of the first phases of the construction and is expected to be available to the public in early 2012. All of the dry-side activities – including group exercise, badminton, football, health and fitness and indoor bowls – will continue to be available during the construction. Cannock Park Golf Course will also remain open throughout the project

The 33.3m main pool at Chase Leisure Centre will be transformed into a six-lane, 25-metre competition-standard facility, with a moveable floor and boom also creating a variable-depth section. A new swimming pool changing village will be created, as well as a brand new fitness suite on the ground floor, with its own dedicated changing facilities. Space for spectators will be increased and the existing teaching pool refurbished.

Cllr Mick Grocott, Cannock Chase Council Culture and Sport Leader, said: “I’m delighted that G F Tomlinson have started work on this exciting scheme. I’m also pleased that we’ve been able to ensure that all the dry-side facilities at the leisure centre will remain open throughout the construction project. I’m sure that the new and  improved facilities, when completed, will be warmly welcomed by residents.”

Stuart Lawrence, Managing Director of G F Tomlinson Building Ltd said: “G F Tomlinson are delighted to be working collaboratively alongside Cannock Chase Council to deliver this improved leisure facility that the local community and future generation can enjoy.”

F T Leisure's scope of works includes the replacement of all the water treatment and filtration systems for the 33.3m pool and learner pool and the design and installation of the static boom and moveable floor system. With the split of the main pool, the pool water circulating pipework is also to be adapted to suit the new geometry.
