Ambitious plans to regenerate the South Shields foreshore in South Tyneside have taken a major leap forward after Graham Construction commenced work on a new £17m swimming pool. Work got underway after a sod cutting ceremony to mark the occasion which was held on Monday 21 March 2011.
South Tyneside Council's development at the former Majestic and Quasar Laser site on Pier Parade will feature the construction of a 25m swimming pool, training pool, freeform leisure pool, fitness suite and sauna, café and exhibition space.
Leader of South Tyneside Council, Councillor Iain Malcolm, said: "We have a beautiful coastline and it is our job to maximise potential of this fantastic natural asset. The pool forms a key part of our regeneration plans for the South Shields foreshore and will provide us with a first-class indoor leisure facility, which means we can attract local people and visitors whatever the weather."
F T Leisure will be designing and installing the water treatment and filtration systems for the 25m 8 lane competition pool, the 18m training pool, the freeform beach area leisure pool and a spa pool. The leisure pool contains numerous water features including geysers, water cannons, water curtains, 2No flume rides and an interactive play structure. In addition, there is a 25m x 6.5m moveable floor in the main pool and a full floor in the training pool, complete with our self-depositing step system.
Completion of the new pool is earmarked for spring 2013.
