The Sands Centre had 40,000 sq ft added to the building, which more than doubled the floorspace of the existing leisure facilities. The new facilities set across two storeys and accessed by a bespoke, internal ‘street’ include a reception area, a four-court Sport England specification sports hall, a 25m eight-lane swimming pool, a 20m learner pool with an innovative moveable floor and a spectator viewing area, wet and dry changing facilities, a 120-station gym and fitness suite, dance studios, a café, bar, and an NHS physiotherapy suite with consulting rooms.
The £27 million redevelopment is a major project that combined The Sands Centre and The Pools sites to now provide a broad range of new programmes and opportunities for physical activity and mental health development. The improved facilities also include a range of sustainable features which will support plans for reducing carbon emissions, improving energy efficiency and providing sustainable, healthy transport options.
