BSF Project Award

Project: Wolverhampton BSF
Client: inspiredspaces and Carillion
Value: £38m
Area: 17,505mē

The design creates an all new school campus to replace the existing Highfields Science Specialist School on its existing site, and colocates it with Penn Fields Special Needs School from another part of the City. The design allows the two schools to easily share learning, sport and recreation resources by centrally locating them between the two schools where they are readily accessible to the community. The design intelligently organises the campus to minimise impact on the Green Belt whilst maximising views from it of its attractive landscape setting.

Highfields School will be maintained in operation throughout the redevelopment and will involve the phased demolition of the existing school to make way for an all newbuild school in a single campus building surrounded by extensive landscaped recreation/learning spaces and sports pitches and courts. The design of both schools is focused on fostering the personalisation of pupils learning with the provision of centralised multi-function spaces that will support a range of learning and teaching styles.

The design is highly sustainable, key features include a BREEAM rating of “Excellent”, 60% renewable energy, maximum use of natural
light and ventilation, extensive use of the building’s high thermal capacity including night time cooling, high levels of thermal insulation
and a Combined Heat and Power Energy Centre fuelled by pure plant oil.

F T Leisure are designing and installing the water treatment and filtration system for the new Hydrotherapy Pool. The pool will also house sensory equipment.
