Work has begun on the construction of the new Tettenhall Wood School. The school is moving from its current base on School Road to new premises on the site of The King’s Church of England School, Regis Road, as part of Wolverhampton City Council’s Building Schools for the Future programme.
Major refurbishment work began at The King’s School in the summer and a special sod-cutting ceremony was held today (Tuesday December 14, 2010) to mark the official start of work on the new purpose-built school for Tettenhall Wood’s 90 pupils, who are aged from five to 19. The co-location of Tettenhall Wood will allow the two schools to share a range of resources including sports and visual arts facilities, while the expertise of Tettenhall Wood staff will help King’s School counterparts support their own pupils with special educational needs.
The new school has been designed to reflect the needs of its pupils and will provide a stimulating learning environment which will help staff build on the excellent work already carried out at the current school. A new multi-sensory integration room will utilise cutting edge technology to allow pupils to learn and explore topics using all their senses. Incorporating changing light, sound, video, vibration, moving air and different aromas, staff will be able to create an environment that can calm or stimulate the senses and, as many autistic pupils are visual learners, this will help to re-enforce learning as well as helping develop their language and communication skills.
The planned hydrotherapy pool will allow the school to continue and build upon the work it already does with pupils around swimming as well as supporting sensory and communication sessions. Every classroom will have direct access to the outside which will enable staff to incorporate more outdoor learning into the curriculum, and pupils from both schools will be able to grow their own fruit and vegetables.
The new-look King’s and Tettenhall Wood schools are due to open in 2012 and are part of the first phase of the Building Schools for the Future Programme, which will eventually lead to the rebuilding or refurbishment of 25 secondary schools, including two new academies, across the city.
F T Leisure will be responsible for the refurbishment of the existing swimming pool at Kings, including a complete new water distribution design and water treatment and filtration plant. In addition, the existing pool tank will be GRP lined. In addition, F T Leisure will be designing the Hydrotherapy Pool system in the new Tettenhall school section, incorporating an interactive Water Room with water features and sensory equipment.
